The Science

VOCs don't lie. Cancer leaves a molecular trail in every breath.

Exhale Science is built on over four decades of peer-reviewed research linking volatile organic compounds in exhaled breath to cancer metabolism. We've translated that science into a clinical diagnostic platform.

Why breath? Why VOCs?

Every cell in the body produces volatile organic compounds as byproducts of metabolism. Cancerous and pre-cancerous cells have fundamentally altered metabolic activity — they produce a distinct VOC signature that is exhaled with every breath. This is not a new hypothesis. It is a well-established biological phenomenon, documented across hundreds of peer-reviewed studies spanning lung, colorectal, breast, gastric, and other cancers.

"Exhaled breath contains thousands of VOCs. A subset of these are reliable biomarkers of malignancy — detectable before symptoms appear, before imaging reveals a mass."

The Mechanism

How cancer changes what you exhale.

01

Altered Cancer Metabolism

Cancer cells undergo metabolic reprogramming — the Warburg effect and other pathways produce elevated levels of specific aldehydes, alkanes, ketones, and aromatic compounds not present at the same concentrations in healthy tissue.

02

Systemic VOC Release

These metabolic byproducts enter the bloodstream and are transported to the lungs, where they diffuse across the alveolar membrane and are exhaled in breath — making breath a real-time window into systemic metabolic activity.

03

Breath Sample Capture

Our proprietary collection device captures the exhaled breath matrix, preserving VOC integrity for downstream analysis. Collection takes under two minutes and requires no patient preparation.

04

High-Sensitivity VOC Analysis

Captured samples are analyzed using high-sensitivity analytical instrumentation to identify and quantify the VOC profile with parts-per-billion precision.

05

AI Biomarker Classification

Our machine learning models — trained on clinically validated datasets — classify the VOC profile against known cancer biomarker signatures, generating a diagnostic output for clinical review.

Our Advantage

What makes Exhale Science different.

Proprietary VOC Panel

We have identified and validated a proprietary panel of VOC biomarkers with superior sensitivity and specificity for cancer detection — developed through our own clinical research program.

Multi-Cancer Detection

Unlike single-cancer biomarker tests, our platform is designed to detect VOC signatures across multiple cancer types from a single breath sample.

Pre-Cancer Detection

Our models are trained to identify pre-cancerous metabolic signatures — enabling intervention before malignancy is established.

AI-Augmented Interpretation

Our proprietary machine learning models continuously improve as clinical data accumulates, increasing diagnostic accuracy over time.
